In the past, the future that people envisioned and what they predicted tells us more about the culture of these dreamers, than of the future itself.
Futurism was the reaction to the trust that post WWII society placed in technology. There were so many rapid changes, that for many, a technological utopia seemed right around the corner. In films, on TV, in architecture and in advertising, the very near future was a streamlined and elegant world, where cars could fly, robots would be performing all of society's manual tasks and living out a perfect existence on distant planets was a possibility.
Retro Futurism explores the tension between the past's vision of the future and the reality of the present. For me, this is especially fascinating, as the future then, is now!
